Annual Appeal Letter 2020

Dear Friend,

We need your support more than ever.
Donate Now!

If there is a singular skill we have worked tirelessly to develop within young people over the last decade at Duxbury Student Union, it is resilience. And 2020 has been a year where not only our students but also our staff, families, and friends have had to demonstrate that skill. We’ve had to dig deep, show true grit, create a roadmap where none existed, experience pitfalls, and rely on each other for guidance along the way.

With a sense of urgency, responsibility and humanity, the DSU staff, students and families met this year’s adversity with action and innovation.

Together, we have navigated the year’s oxymoron: we connected remotely, we socialized at a distance, and we created togetherness while apart.

When hanging out, hand shakes, and high-fives became dangerous, technology helped us to laser focus on helping students feel supported and connected in a time of uncertainty. And while nothing can effectively replace the benefits of in person connection, Zoom provided a unique window into each others lives. We found new, engaging ways to learn about the world and about each other.

We are quite proud to share our successes of this year despite its challenges.

NHS Volunteer Program

DSU’s ongoing tutoring/mentoring program goes virtual on Zoom providing students with academic triage one hour per week. Parents and students, like Beck and his mom, are thankful for the assistance:

“Dear DSU:  I just wanted to reach out to thank you! This was such a wonderful experience for us. Sydney worked really well with Beck. She assisted him with his writing in an engaging manner, and he was happy to have the assistance for his assignments. Finally, she made the experience really positive by tapping into his competitive spirit and beating him soundly at a game of Type Rush:)”

Your financial support is desperately needed.

The Duxbury Student Union is incredibly grateful to the entire Duxbury community for supporting our mission for more than 10 years. After a year of unprecedented challenges and crushing COVID expenses, your financial support is desperately needed to continue our commitment to Collaboration, Inclusion, Innovation and FUN.

If you are able, please give to the DSU to support our ongoing initiatives to support students and families Together. Apart. At least for now.

On behalf of the entire Duxbury Student Union staff and Board of Directors, we wish you good health, happiness, and joy throughout this very different holiday season.

With gratitude,

Sue Bradford | Executive Director

Gretchen O’Donnell | Board President
